Ensemble was formed in 2001, to collaboratively create and tour exciting, beautiful, thought-provoking theatre work, which explores the relationship between music, text and song, alongside educational programmes for young people.
The company has produced seven new theatre/music pieces (see Productions) in association with the following artists: Richard Aylwin, Tinoush Bahrami, Simon Banham, Nick Beadle, Russell Churney, Damian Cruden, Elissa Guralnick, Rachana Jadhav, Amina Khayyam, Charles Koslowske, Simon Lane, Karina Lucas, Chris Madin, Elizabeth Mansfield, Anna Mudeka, Naoko Nagai, Azusa Ono, Mark Payton, The Peabody Trio (Natasha Brofsky, Seth Knopp & Violaine Melançon), Rob Pickavance, Stephen Rose, Leon Rosselson, John Sackville, Julia Tobiska, Steve Trafford, Tim Sutton, Gilly Tompkins and Tom Wright.
Ensemble regularly works in co-production with York Theatre Royal, and has produced in association with Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, The Drill Hall, London, and Leeds Lieder. Several of Ensemble's national UK tours and Education Programmes, as well as research and development work, have been funded by the Arts Council of England National Lottery Fund, and Spelthorne Borough Council.
Ensemble is a member of the Independent Theatre Council and is an 'Affiliated Company' at Farnham Maltings.
